Taking Care of the Littluns

While under panic from the beast in Chapter 6, Ralph and Jack have the following exchange:

” ‘Let’s be moving,’ said Jack relentlessly, ‘we’re wasting time.’

‘No we’re not.  What about the littluns?’

‘Sucks to the littluns!’

‘Someone’s got to look after them.’

‘Nobody has so far.’

‘There was no need!  Now there is.  Piggy’ll look after them.’ ” (101)

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty bothered by what both Jack and Ralph say here.  Do you think there has always been a need to take care of the littluns or not?  Is it a good thing that, regardless of past behavior, they have this viewpoint now?

The Impact of Fear

Fear is obviously one of the most powerful human emotions.  In fact, it’s in our nature to experience fear and react accordingly.  What lines in Chapters 5-6 do you believe have the most fear behind them?  What role is fear taking in the boy’s everyday life now?

Rules…for survival?

One of the most upsetting scenes of Lord of the Flies occurs in Chapter 5.  Ralph is desperately trying to maintain order within the group, with a wise Piggy at his side.  Eventually he pleads, “Because the rules are the only thing we’ve got!” (91).  This line can be so gut-wrenching because we can virtually sense Ralph’s panic and pain.

Do you think he is right in this statement though?  Are the rules the only thing they’ve got?  What do you predict will happen next?
